The My Passport Pro is not meant to be a rugged drive dust, debris, and water have plenty of paths for ingress.
The fan only kicks in when things get too hot inside, but when it does the noise is loud enough to get the attention of other people in the room. The bottom of the drive has holes near the front for ventilation and a wee little fan in the back. The My Passport Pro’s aluminum enclosure is solidly built, and rubber bumpers on the inside help protect the drives from sudden impacts. The My Passport Pro’s tiny fan makes a lot more noise than you’d think.
Although the LaCie drive does require a power supply, it is quieter than the My Passport Pro, and the LaCie drive has two Thunderbolt bolts, giving you more flexibility in a daisy chain. Compared to a desktop storage device, LaCie’s Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series is similar in size and capacity to the My Passport Pro, though it cost $70 more.

You don’t need an external power source with this drive, but its heft may make you think twice about whether you really need to bring it with you. The My Passport Pro is thicker than two 15-inch Retina MacBook Pros stacked on top of each other. You can, of course, use Disk Utility to configure the drive as a RAID 0, 1, or as independent disks. The weight is due in part to the My Passport Pro’s pair of 2.5-inch 5400-rpm drives, preconfigured in a RAID 0 for the greatest capacity and speed. The 4TB version I tested weighs 1.58 pounds, which is light when compared to your average five-pound clay brick. They are portable (can fit in the palm of one’s hand), fast (over 100MB/s on USB 3.0) and secure (can be encrypted with 256-bit AES encryption) and even comes with a 2-year warranty.What’s striking about Western Digital’s My Passport Pro portable hard drive is its size and weight. Overall Western Digital’s redesigned lineup of the My Passport products certainly adds a bit of flavour and uniqueness to the portable hard drives.

For Mac systems you can either get the My Passport formatted for Macs or format the portable hard drive yourself if I’m not mistaken.Īnd in a real world test, I copied just over 20GB of files over to My Passport on a USB 3.0 connection and it averaged around the 105MB/s mark, pretty darn close to the 32GB Speed Test done above using Crystal DiskMark. This model of My Passport is formatted to be compatible with Windows systems straight out of the box. I was expecting to be able to clip it on to the My Passport but couldn’t find a slot, so I’m assuming it is there as an additional incentive for reviewing this product. However if you are buying this product off the shelf at a retailer, you won’t be getting this blue box with goodies such as a leather nametag. Now firstly I do want to say that the box Western Digital sent the My Passport to me in was pretty nice, which actually foreshadows the not-bad-looking device that’s about to be unboxed.
